EFFECTIVE BED BUG CONTROL FOR PITTSBURGH
Bed bugs in Pittsburgh pose a significant risk and challenge to both residential and commercial properties alike. Eliminating these pests (including eggs, nymphs and adult bed bugs) takes more than your average pest exterminator. At Witt Pest Management, we have developed an array of bed bug services to help owners of homes and businesses exterminate bed bug problems. Our Pittsburgh pest control firm has been protecting health and property throughout Western Pennsylvania for over 100 years and four generations of family ownership; you can count on us to resolve your bed bug problem.
THE FIRST STEP TO BEING BED BUG FREE IS KNOWING YOU HAVE BED BUGS.
Professional bed bug inspections performed by bed bug control specialists
Inspections are offered to verify the presence and extent of infestations. A Witt specialist will inspect your property for bed bug activity and/or signs of it. Once the evaluation is complete, the specialist will discuss with you proper treatment and preparation requirements so that you are prepared for a successful treatment and reduce the risk of future re-infestations. In cases where we are unable to find bed bugs, we may install Verifi® units near bed or other suspected area, at an additional charge, activate it and return within one week to inspect.
Dog knows best in the detection of bombs... and bed bugs
Dogs have been successfully used by military and law enforcement to locate firearms, explosives, narcotics, missing persons, and accelerants used in suspected arson cases. With similar training, dogs can search for bed bugs and detect activity with pinpoint accuracy. They can also fit into tight spaces and seek out bed bugs without having to strip apart and rearrange rooms, steps usually required for a traditional visual inspection. What might normally take a pest control technician hours can be done by a dog in minutes — and with more accuracy. Our teams are trained and certified by two independent, nationally recognized organizations. With a keen sense of smell, our K9 bed bug detectives sniff out odor from live bed bugs and eggs in cracks and other hiding places that might be missed on a visual inspection.
EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS FOR BED BUG PROBLEMS IN HOMES & BUSINESSES
Simply throwing out the mattress in the infested room will not exterminate bed bugs. To completely get rid of bed bugs, whether you only see a couple of bugs or are dealing with a major infestation, professional treatment is necessary. At Witt Pest Management, we offer highly effective bed bug treatment options that will take care of these pests in homes and businesses.
INTEGRATED TREATMENT FOR BED BUGS
Comprehensive bed bug extermination and follow-up for one fee
It is extremely difficult to eradicate bed bugs. That's why our standard service includes the necessary products and follow-up visits for one fee. During our initial service call, we conduct a detailed inspection of the affected and adjoining rooms and devise a plan that entails a targeted treatment of bed frame, mattress, box spring, furniture, behind baseboards, switch covers, and other areas where they tend to hide. Bed-bug proof box spring and mattress encasements are available for extra protection. We'll then provide a series of follow-up visits over the course of 4-6 weeks, designed to coincide with bed bug incubation periods.
INTEGRATED TREATMENT FOR BED BUGS - ECO (ITB-ECO)
Comprehensive and eco-sensitive bed bug extermination and follow-up for one fee
With this option, we are one of the first companies in our area using a newer product called Aprehend® invented by a research team out of Penn State University as the primary product to provide the residual bed bug protection. Not only is this a completely new product offering, having been recently registered in the state of Pennsylvania, it also involves a specialized application method with specific equipment.
Aprehend® is a non-toxic biopesticide that is composed of Beauveria bassiana fungal spores sprayed strategically in narrow bands where bed bugs are known to walk. Areas include along baseboards, in and around the bed frames and furniture, sofas, chairs, pipes, conduit, wiring, cracks and crevices, etc. In addition, Witt technicians will also apply a natural dust formulation in any void spaces such as wall voids by treating outlets and other crack and crevices leading to potential pockets of bed bug harborage.
Bed bugs of all life stages, sex, or feeding status are killed within four to ten days following short-term contact with a treated surface. The fungal spores germinate within 20 hours of contact and then penetrate the cuticle of the bed bug and colonize inside, resulting in death.

WITT ANSWERS COMMONLY ASKED BED BUG QUESTIONS
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans. Adult bed bugs look similar to an apple seed, approximately 1/4 of an inch long, oval in shape, and are reddish-brown in color. Juvenile bed bugs ("nymphs") differ from adults in that they are often much smaller (1 millimeter) and may appear clear or tan in color. Bed bugs prefer to live in protected areas near to where people sleep or rest for periods of time, such as the seams of mattresses, behind headboards, or inside furniture. Learn more about bed bugs by visiting our pest library!
Why are they back?
In the United States, bed bugs were very common until about World War II when the introduction of such pesticides as DDT were highly effective in eradicating these biting insects. Entomologists speculate that the reemergence of bed bugs may be due to increased international travel, secondhand furniture, the ban on DDT and a higher resistance to currently used pesticides as well as lack of public awareness.
How do you get bed bugs?
Simply put, bed bugs can be found wherever people tend to congregate. They are adept hitchhikers and will travel in luggage, on clothing, and inside furniture or other items that have been in infested areas. They are found in homes, apartment and office buildings, hotels, train cars, airplanes, and many other places where people are at rest for a period of time. In multiple-unit housing facilities in Pittsburgh, bed bugs will often infest surrounding units and in single-family homes, it is also common for bed bugs to be found in living rooms as well as bedrooms and laundry areas.
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
While bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, they are most active at night and due to their cryptic nature they are not often seen during the day. Because bed bugs are small and flat, they are able to squeeze into tiny cracks and crevices on the mattress and box spring, behind headboards and inside furniture, sometimes making them virtually undetectable. With the exception of seeing live or dead bed bugs, one common sign is the presence of dark ink-like stains on the mattress or bedding materials and on the furniture itself. Skins that are shed from bed bugs during the molting process may also be found near to where they hide. It is important to know and understand that while some people show symptoms resulting from bed bug bites, many will observe no symptoms at all.
What should I do if I see a bed bug?
If you see a bed bug or suspect you have bed bugs, know that they will not go away without treatment and, in fact, will turn into a major infestation if not addressed. If you believe your home or business has been infested by bed bugs, seek help right away. At Witt Pest Management, we offer bed bug inspections, integrated bed bug extermination treatments, and other bed bug services to curb bed bug activity for residential and commercial properties.
