Mosquitoes may be annoying, but they are actually far worse than they seem. Yes, it’s no fun to be chased indoors at a BBQ by the obnoxious buzz of mosquitoes, but staying away from these pests is a good idea, especially considering how serious a threat they could pose to your health! Mosquitoes are known to be a serious vector for diseases. In fact, mosquitoes kill more than a million people every year with the diseases they spread. These diseases include West Nile virus, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever and several forms of encephalitis. Humans aren’t the only ones susceptible to these diseases. Dogs can get dog heartworm from mosquitoes while horses can get Eastern Equine Encephalitis. These dangerous insects are known to kill more humans a year than other animals that humans typically fear, including sharks and bears!
What can be done to protect yourself from mosquitoes?
First thing first- wear insect repellent. A repellent containing DEET or Picaridin is a good choice in repelling mosquitoes. Put it on your clothes or directly on your skin. If you have children, check with your child’s pediatrician to determine the best type of insect repellent to use on them. Other things you can do to prevent mosquitoes on your property include:
Keep your lawn cut short to eliminate hiding places for mosquitoes during the hottest part of the day.
Eliminate areas of standing water; mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Every time it rains, check your property for things that may be accumulating standing water.
Stay indoors during the peak mosquito activity times, which include dawn and dusk.
Wear light colored clothing; mosquitoes are less attracted to light colors- they tend to be attracted to dark blue, black and red.
Wear long sleeved shirts and pants; tuck pants into socks to protect your legs and ankles.
Wear sneakers instead of sandals to avoid getting bitten on your feet.
These tips should help reduce the number of mosquito bites you get while spending time outdoors, but mosquitoes are tricky little pests and can be almost impossible to avoid completely.
