We, as citizens of the United States, are protected by the Fair Labor Standards Act, which contains a provision that overtime must be paid to workers who work over 40 hours in a standard workweek, and this overtime pay must be at a rate that is at least 1-1/2 times the regular rate of pay. So, if your employer needs you to work extra hours and be away from your family, they have to pay you extra. Thanks, Uncle Sam! Termites have no such protection.

In a termite colony, no such provision exists. There is no governmental agency protecting the rights of the termite worker. Those termites can work overtime till they're blue in the face, and they do. They work an eight-hour shift, seven days a week, plus eight hours overtime, and eight hours overnight. Aren't you glad you're not a termite worker? They work continually without ceasing and never have time to sleep. But, on the positive side, their work day is like one long lunch hour.

If you were to hold a single subterranean termite in your hand, you wouldn't think much of it. The worker termites almost look like tiny yellowish worms, until you examine them closer and see that they have six legs and two antennae, like other insects. Their size makes it hard to imagine these little maggot-like pests doing any real damage to your home. But, when you consider the fact that termites never stop eating, and that a colony can have millions of termites in it, you will begin to see the danger they can pose.

Not only can millions of termites nibble constantly on the wood of your home or business, they do it almost silently from the inside. This makes them hard to detect and gives them longer to slowly weaken the structure they are feeding on. Eventually walls begin to bulge, floors begin to sink down, and doors and windows begin to stick. Unfortunately, by the time you notice these signs, the damage has already been done. Your wall studs and support beams are warped beyond repair.

What is even more frustrating about these wood-eating insects is that they can be entirely excluded from a home or business. When you find termites have been shredding the structure of your property for years than you realize that you could have easily prevented it.

Don't roll the dice and take the chance that termites won't silently infest your property.
