Cockroaches are gross. Whether you are dealing with one or two here and there when you flick on the lights at night or you have hundreds of them pouring out of a bag of cat food that has been sitting, open, a little too long in the pantry, it is horrible when these insects start to appear. But, as horrible as it is, we are sometimes tempted to shrug them off when we only see one here and there. If you're thinking of shrugging cockroaches off, there are a few things you should know first.
Why Cockroaches Are Bad
There are many reasons why cockroaches should be kept out of homes.
They have been connected to the symptoms of asthma. Studies have shown an increase in symptoms in homes where cockroaches are present.
Roaches are linked to stomach illness. These dirty bugs will crawl directly from your fermenting trash to your food prep surfaces. When they do, they can spread harmful bacteria to the foods you cook.
Cockroaches have been known to bite people, especially sleeping people and especially on eyelashes or eyelids.
Cockroaches are directly linked to spreading human diseases. According to the World Health Organization, cockroaches have the ability to spread dysentery, cholera, leprosy, typhoid fever, and viral diseases such as poliomyelitis.
Cockroaches can carry the eggs of parasitic worms, which may lead to dermatological symptoms and respiratory problems.
How To Keep Cockroaches Out Of Your Pittsburgh Home
Here are several steps you can take in an effort to keep cockroaches and certain other pests out of your home. However, once these filthy pests establish themselves, they multiply quickly and are extremely difficult to totally get rid of using do-it-yourself methods.
Be sure all exterior trash is stored securely inside tightly sealed containers. This will keep smells in and bugs out.
Remove pet food from outside. If you need to feed pets outside, pick up the dish when your pet is finished.
If you have a compost heap, keep it well away from your exterior walls.
Dry up any areas of moisture surrounding your home. Make sure your gutters are clear and unbroken so they channel water away from your home. Fix any leaky spigots. And remove items in your yard that hold water. This will remove water sources for cockroaches and other pests to drink and remove breeding sites for mosquitoes.
Remove weeds and other overgrowth.
Keep the inside of your home free of food and water sources.
Always store foods in the fridge, freezer, or inside sturdy containers with tight-fitting lids.
