It doesn't seem possible that winter is over and soon it will be time for all the wonders of spring. It’s time to open your windows and doors to let the fresh, sun-warmed springtime air drift through the house; time to find gardening tools to dig into the moist, cool earth; time to find millions of ants on your pet's food bowl and a multitude of stink bugs on your windows…

Yes, it's true. Along with the "wonders" of spring, come springtime pests. Here are a few pests that are common to Pittsburgh in the springtime.

  1. Ants and Termites. Carpenter ants and termites become more active in springtime, and these costly pests are both very good at one thing - destroying your home. Termites literally eat you out of house and home, since they actually do "eat" wood. Carpenter ants, on the other hand, simply carve out tunnels and nests in your wood; they don't actually eat it. But both pests can be extremely destructive if left untreated.

  2. Lady Bugs and Stink Bugs. These two insects also become more active in springtime, coming out from hiding, and multiplying rapidly. If you are seeing either of these pests inside your home, it is likely that they overwintered inside your walls for the cold season. While a few Lady Bugs can be fun to have around, an infestation of hundreds can be quite disturbing. And stink bugs are not only a nuisance; they produce an unpleasant smell if crushed. They may also be a concern if you have small children who tend to put things in their mouth.

  3. Stinging Insects and Flies. A sure sign of spring is the buzzing of a bumble bee or hum of a fly. Several stinging insects that increase in spring in Pennsylvania include bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants. While bees are necessary if you have a garden, the other pests are a real concern to have in your yard, or worse, inside your walls. And no one likes to be invaded by flies. Not only are they a nuisance, but they are also known carriers of a number of diseases including typhoid, cholera, dysentery, salmonella, and tuberculosis. They also can transmit the eggs of parasitic worms to humans.
