You may be wondering why rodent infestations seem to be more common in the winter months and what prevention steps you can take to keep them out. As it gets colder in the Pittsburgh area this winter, mice and rats will seek shelter in your home. Your home provides them with warmth, and more importantly, the food source they need when outdoor food sources become scarce.

To keep them out you need to think like one of these rodents. That means getting down low and looking up high. Mice and rats can scurry across the ground and will burrow into tiny holes in your foundation. They sneak in through openings around pipes and ground wires, and can fit in cracks as small as a dime. These rodents are also good climbers, which is why it’s also important to look at vents, around your roofline, and your chimney.

If this all sounds daunting, it is. There are many ways rodents can get into your home, and it’s almost impossible to keep them out with DIY home improvement methods.

Steps to Take to Prevent Rodents in Your Home

There are a few steps you can take to help keep rodents out of your home. Some things you can do include:

  • Sealing up holes and cracks in the exterior walls of your home is imperative for preventing rodents from gaining access to your home.
  • Eliminating easy access to food sources. Mice and rats have incisors that allow them to chew through many types of materials. They can eat their way easily through a cardboard box or light plastics. They will eat almost anything, from fruits and nuts to cereals and grains, and even candy and chocolate. Keeping your food in glass or hard plastic storage containers is the best way to keep rodents out of your food supply.
  • Taking your trash out frequently, mopping floors, wiping down counters, and vacuuming up crumbs and spills regularly. Removing these sticky and fragrant messes that attract rodents will help deter their attraction to your home.
