It is that time of year once again, there is a nip in the air, Halloween costumes are in the stores, and the decorating season is upon us! First up is fall, and who doesn’t love decorating their home for the fall season? Decorating for fall brings the opportunity to introduce a lot of different colors into your home that add coziness and warmth allowing you to curl up on the couch and really enjoy that cup of coffee!
You probably already have some traditional decorations that you place around your home every year, but the pros at Witt Pest Management are here to give you some new ideas for decorating your home this fall!
Add some sparkle to fall this year. Instead of the plain old carved pumpkin, try spray painting your carved pumpkins with iridescent spray and then while the paint is still wet, sprinkle glitter over them. We definitely suggest doing this particular craft outside!
Hollow out small pumpkins or tall gourds and place fall flowers in them to use as a simple organic centerpiece for your table.
Create a simple fall wreath using a basic foam wreath that can be found at any craft store. Wrap burlap around the wreath and then hot glue a few burlap flowers or fall themed flowers to the bottom “corner” of the wreath. Don’t forget to add a few tiny pumpkins, gourds, and acorns for that authentic fall feel.
Make a fall banner to place across a mantel. Use a natural twine and attach color leaves that have fallen from trees on your property or burlap leaves or flowers that can be purchased.
Traditional corn stalks, hay bales, and mums also create a beautiful natural fall touch to any front porch, walkway, or deck!
Now that your home is ready for fall, we want to also make sure that it is protected against pests that can come with fall decorations. When decorating your home at any time of the year with natural elements there is always a risk of pests being introduced into your home; luckily, though, there are some simple steps that you can take to help protect yourself and your home.
As tempting as it may be, don’t keep items that were created with edible items, they will not last and will act as a magnet to pests that can use them as food source. Decorations created with natural or edible items should be discarded and created again the next year!
Store any decorations that can be kept in plastic containers with a tight fitting lid. If that is not possible and you need to use cardboard boxes, place decorations in sealable plastic bags before placing them into the box.
Deter pests from storage areas like basement, attics, closets, and crawl spaces by using dehumidifiers in your home. Many pests are attracted to dark, damp areas.
Be observant! Before purchasing plants, pumpkins, or hay to decorate your home inspect items for signs of pest activity. Don’t buy any items that are moldy or seem to be infested with insects.
