Before you get too excited--no--this isn't an article about how to cook beef tips to perfection on the grill. But, if you hate bugs, you'll find the tips in this article to be indispensable as you plan your 4th of July Barbeque.
Here is the problem:
Ants. Does your mouth water when you think of a juicy cheeseburger with all the fixings? Is your idea of Heaven on Earth a table full of chips, casseroles, dips, and pie? Ants love these things too. Some ants are protein eaters and will go directly for the meat products. Other ants have a sweet tooth and will be on the prowl for cakes and pies. No matter what those ants are looking for, it can be a pain when they find it.
Flies. These disgusting little pests are gifted with the ability to fly--hence the name. This advanced mobility allows them to land right on your food, whenever they feel like it. This wouldn't be a big problem if they hadn't just crawled around in the garbage or explored a sewage pipe--or if they didn't have the nasty habit of regurgitating their stomach acid onto food and sucking it up with their straw-like mouthparts.
Stinging Insects. Do you like sugary drinks? Stinging insects like them too. If you have soda, Kool-Aid, lemonade, and other sweet drinks around, you're going to lure these pests in.
Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. These pests don't care what's on your menu. The food they're looking for is inside you.
This is the solution:
Flies. Before you have a party in your backyard, make sure to do a quick search for sites these insects use to breed. If you have any open trash cans, replace them with cans that seal. This will reduce the fly population in your backyard.
Ants and stinging insects. They best way to stop ants and stinging insects from ruining your BBQ activities is to do a preemptive strike. Have a pest control company remove all the nests from your property and eradicate all colonies in the ground. The fewer insects you have living in your yard, the fewer issues you'll have with them on the 4th of July.
Ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. All of these blood eaters can be reduced and controlled with lawn and yard treatments. Get a pest controller to treat your lawn before the big day, and you'll have fewer bites from these pests. Also, be aware that bug zappers will lure mosquitoes onto your property, but they are only good at killing male (non-biting) mosquitoes. Instead of a zappers and toxic smoke generators, consider using fans to create a breeze where you'll be relaxing or eating. It isn't practical to create a breeze for your entire lawn, but it can make a big difference near a picnic table.
