There are many pests that make people feel grossed out and uncomfortable. There are certain pests, like spiders, that many have a phobia of. There are also pests that are a big problem for people because they cause health risks or do property damage. But, even some pests that are mostly just a nuisance can be disturbing to have in your Brentwood home.

One insect that gives people the creeps is the centipede. This pest is not pretty, looking almost like an alien creature. With their multiple legs and long bodies, they appear to be something out of a horror movie. While most people have a general idea of what centipedes look like, it is still easy to confuse them with millipedes. Knowing the differences between these two creatures can help you figure out which pest you’re dealing with and how to get rid of them.

These are the characteristics of a centipede:

  • They can have anywhere from 15-170 pairs of legs.

  • They have a long body that looks a bit worm-like.

  • They have long antennae.

  • They range in color from yellow to dark brown.

  • They may have striped patterns.

  • They have claw-like appendages around their mouths.

One of the best ways to tell if you’re seeing a millipede as opposed to a centipede is that a centipede's legs come out from the body and are more obvious. A millipede's legs are somewhat hidden under the body.

Problems Can Centipedes Cause

When it comes to almost any pests, people want to know what risks are associated with having that pest in their home.  Centipedes are mostly considered a nuisance pest. This means that they don’t pose any significant health risks to humans or pets and that they won’t cause significant property damage. The main thing to note about centipedes is that they do have venom in their jaws that they use to kill prey. However, this venom does not impact anything other than insects. There is a small chance that a centipede may bite you, causing a small, annoying bite, but this is rare.

Centipede Prevention Tips

The main thing to know when it comes to preventing centipedes is that they are attracted to moisture-rich environments. When outside, they are normally found in places like piles of leaves, rotting logs, and under stones. They usually only come inside when seeking prey or a moisture-filled environment when the air outside is dry. They are mostly found in places like basements, bathrooms, and crawl spaces. The most effective way to keep them out and make your home inhospitable to them is to reduce moisture.

Here are a few simple steps you can take:

  • Remove piles of leaves, grass, and decaying wood from your property.
  • Keep firewood away from the exterior of your home and off of the ground.
  • Use dehumidifiers.
  • Reduce moisture content by fixing leaky faucets and pipes.
  • Ensure your basement, attic, and crawl spaces are ventilated.
  • Try to seal up holes and cracks around windows and doors.

Getting Rid Of A Centipede Infestation

If you only see a centipede occasionally, it’s easy to just vacuum them up to get rid of them. However, if you’ve noticed multiple centipedes, you could be dealing with an infestation.
