Mice may be cute to look at when they are snuggled safely inside their cage in your classroom or in the pet store or when they are scampering in the great wild outdoors, but they are far from cute when they decide to use your home for their winter abode. Mice are actually dangerous creatures. They have three main ways to threaten you and your family.
First of all, mice are great at chewing. They can chew through just about any substance and will cause a lot of costly damage to your home, and I'm not just talking about that old sweater packed away in the attic or those magazines in the basement. In fact, did you know that mice can even chew through some types of cement? Now those are some pretty sharp teeth! But, the danger comes when they decide to gnaw on one of their favorite substances - wires. This may not seem too serious at first until you consider the estimate that nearly 40% of all fires of 'unknown origin' were actually found to have been started by mice chewing through electrical wires within walls. Now, that is some costly damage!
Secondly, mice carry diseases. They can transmit bacteria from sewers, garbage cans, dumpsters, landfills, and other unseemly places they love to frequent to your kitchen pantry, counter tops, and silverware drawer. If that isn't bad enough, they contaminate your food and dishes with their saliva, urine, and feces as well. After all, they don't have very good 'potty' manners and will just drop their waste whenever and wherever they please.
Lastly, mice carry parasites with them. They do not have access to good veterinarians that will help eliminate ticks, lice, mites, and fleas. So, they just run around carrying these pests, along with the diseases they carry, wherever they go, including your home. Besides Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and many others; these parasites also carry the plague. Although the plague has not reached the notoriety it historically did, plague can make you extremely ill and does still cause death at a very high rate. That's right! Right here in the good ole’ U.S. of A.
