Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

And auld lang syne!

As Americans most of us have heard this song sung, and perhaps even sung it ourselves, on New Year's Eve. It has a rather sad feel to it, but there aren't many out there who really know just exactly what it means. Well, it turns out that this Scottish poem turned song is about remembering things from long, long ago. "Auld" means old, and the meaning of "lang syne" is long since. In effect it is saying; let's not forget people from long, long ago. Let's not let this new year make us forget where we came from. It's about remembering, and maybe a little about letting go.

Well, we might not want to forget the people of our lives, but there is one thing (or perhaps many things) that we would all like to get rid of, and forget about completely: Household pests! They are a danger to our families in more ways than one. Some bring disease and illness, such as rats and mice; others destroy our homes, such as termites or carpenter ants. No one wants these around. Everyone would rather get rid of them, and then wouldn't it be nice if they were "never brought to mind."

Here are some ways pests can "be forgot."

There are many things a homeowner can do to deter pests from entering their home. The following is a list of do-it-yourself tasks that may help keep pests from invading:

  • Clean, clean, clean. Keeping your house clean, especially from food particles, will go a long way in deterring bugs, rodents, and wildlife from staying in your home. Pay special attention to areas where there are likely to be spills and crumbs such as under the toaster and fridge, and between the oven and counter. Also, keeping clutter down to a minimum will give pests fewer places to hide.

  • Make sure dirty dishes are either cleaned right away or left in a sink full of soapy water.

  • Fix any leaks and mop up any standing water in the home in places around sinks, tubs, or toilets. Dry out humid areas using fans or dehumidifiers.

  • Trim bushes and tree branches away from your exterior walls. Bugs and animals use these as bridges to your walls and roofline.

  • Fix or replace any broken screens and make sure all door sweeps are in good working order.

  • Seal up any gaps or cracks in your foundation, walls, or roof area using a caulking gun.

  • Store all firewood as far from the house as possible. Also, make sure it is up off the ground.
