Do you get visits from brown, shield-shaped insects every fall? If so, you're not alone. This is a common occurrence throughout our Pittsburgh service area. As you are probably already aware, those are called stink bugs and they are stinky bugs to have inside your home. There are a few things you can do if stink bugs invade your home but it is much better to prevent them from invading your home in the first place. Here are a few tips that can help.

Top 5 Stink Bug Prevention Tips

  • Wipe your sills and doors with scented dryer sheets. It may sound funny but stink bugs don't like stinky smells and they find the smell of dryer sheets to be repulsive. Find the strongest smelling sheets you can get and wipe down locations that stink bugs seem to be congregating, especially window sills and door frames.

  • Repair damaged screens. While stink bugs can't make it all the way into your home by entering a window or door screen, it gets them one step closer. This can be a particular problem if you have sliding glass doors. When you open your doors, you may think you're protected, only to find out a stink bug has infiltrated your screen door.

  • Replace door sweeps. A very common entry point for these stinky bugs is the gap under doors. If you do not have door sweeps or your door sweeps are damaged, you could let these bugs into your home by the dozens.

  • Replace weatherstripping. Over time, gaps can form in the weatherstripping around exterior doors. If you turn off all the lights in your interior and notice bright beams of light getting past your exterior doors, you have gaps that should be fixed.

  • Fill in holes created by wood-damaging pests. When mice, rats, carpenter ants, carpenter bees, termites and other wood-damaging pests make holes in the wood of your home, stink bugs will use those holes to get in. Use a caulking gun or some expanding foam product to fill holes in and keep those stinky bugs out.
