A fruit fly isn't much to look at. These tiny, tan flies are only about ⅛ of an inch in length. But, as you are probably aware, you rarely run into one fruit fly by itself. And if you do, you only run into one fruit fly for a short period of time. It doesn't take long for one fly to turn into a cloud of flies. Are you dealing with these frustrating little specks right now? Here are a few things you should know that can help you keep fruit flies from taking over.

Fruit Flies Breed in Decaying Matter

The most important step in stopping a fruit fly infestation is to seek out and eliminate potential breeding locations. If fruit flies are able to breed inside your home, things are going to go from bad to worse.

  • Kitchen trash. This is a prime breeding location. Fruit flies can breed in rotting organic material in your trash and also in the rotting juices in the bottom of your trash bin. Take your current trash out, clean your bin thoroughly, and remove your trash every two days to make sure this is no longer a suitable breeding site for those flies.

  • Fruit on the table. When you leave fruit on your kitchen table, counter, island or some other spot, it can be a breeding site for these flies. Put fruit in the fridge until you're ready to eat it.

  • Vegetables. Some vegetables such as tomatoes, squash, and potatoes can be an overlooked food source and potential breeding location for fruit flies. If you have any exposed vegetables, do your best to contain them.

  • Juice spills. It doesn't take much of a juice spill to create a breeding site for fruit flies. Do a deep clean of your kitchen and make sure to clean up any spills as they happen. Slowly, the flies should begin to disappear. A fruit fly won't live much more than 40 days.

Use Your Vacuum to Suck Them Up

No one wants to wait 40 days for fruit flies to die, so in the meantime, you can suck them up with your vacuum to get rid of them or create a homemade fruit fly trap. There are many fruit fly trap ideas on the web. The best ones use apple cider vinegar or wine to lure flies in.
