Of all the species of cockroach in the world, only four (and occasionally a fifth) live and breed in Pennsylvania. They are the American cockroach, brown banded cockroach, Oriental cockroach, German cockroach, and (occasionally) the Pennsylvania wood cockroach. All cockroach species are capable of transmitting harmful bacteria, protozoa, and viruses to humans, and their shed casings and excrement can cause allergy or asthma attacks in some people. No matter how you look at it, a cockroach in your Pittsburgh business spells trouble, but today we are going to focus on the American cockroach.

The largest species of cockroach in Pennsylvania is the American cockroach. It measures 1-1/2 inches and is a red/brown color. Both the males and females of this species have wings, but they seldom fly. They have three stages of development which are: egg, nymph, and adult. The nymph resembles smaller versions of the adults except without wings.

This pest can be found abundantly in dumps, sewer systems, and other unsanitary places where they will pick up harmful pathogens that stick to their bodies and legs. Once inside, they can be found in the basements of restaurants, bakeries, food processing plants and stores, as well as in the moist, dark areas of homes. Everywhere they wander, they deposit their harmful pathogens and contaminate food sources, food prep areas, dishes, and utensils by simply crawling across them.

It is no secret that one of a business’s greatest assets (or biggest detriment) is their reputation. Unfortunately, even the appearance of a few of these germ-ridden insects can cause disgrace and damage to your reputation resulting in lost revenue or worse. Food associated industries have even been closed down due to cockroach contamination. So, as you can see, the need to ensure that American cockroaches (or any other breed) are kept far from your business is paramount.
