Are ants plaguing you in your Pittsburgh home? There are a few species of ants that live off the generosity of Pennsylvanian homeowners, and they can be quite insistent on making themselves at home. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to discourage them.
Keep things dry: Ants in Pittsburgh like moisture and need a water source. For this reason, it is important to keep things dry in and around your home. Make sure all your gutters are in good working order and that water is being channeled away. When you have water running down the side of your house, not only does it give ants the water source they're looking for, it also works to soften and rot your wood. The more rot you have, the more ants you'll have. And, rot makes your house more attractive to carpenter ants.
Protect food: All ants, even carpenter ants, are looking for a food source. Some ants prefer protein and will go straight for your pet's food dish. Other ants are looking for something sweet and like a nice juice spill or apple core. It is best to hide all food sources, so that no ant is encouraged to come into your home. And, when you seal your food, you protect it from harmful bacteria ants can spread to it. Remember, the ants that are crawling around in your sugar are the same ants that crawled around inside your trash. Put pantry foods in sealed plastic containers. Put fruit in the fridge. Keep the crumbs cleaned up around the toaster. And, don't leave dishes sitting next to the sink with food on them.
Fill the gaps: Using a caulking gun to fill in holes, gaps, and cracks can go a long way to deterring pesky ants. Make sure to seal up around air conditioning units, pipes, outlets and window frames too. If you have any cracks in your basement walls, use a sealant to take care of them. And, when you're sealing your walls, be sure to look in hard-to-get-at areas. If it is a pain for you to get to, ants are sure to be exploiting that fact.
