The Centers for Disease Control has recently issued a warning about the triple threat of mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks. Statistics have shown there to be a significant increase in reported cases of illness due to these three pests. Illness spread from mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks have tripled in the last dozen years. We have also seen 9 new diseases identified during this time. This is not to mention the cases that go undetected or unreported.
Why the Increased Threat?
There are several factors contributing to these new and increased threats. Global climate change and warmer weather means that these three pests are surviving through the winter in many places where they previously died off.
In addition, increased worldwide travel is allowing carriers of these diseases to unknowingly bring them into the country. For example, West Nile virus was unheard of in the US until 20 years ago when it was introduced in NYC and then slowly spread through the country. Zika virus is not native to the US. Travelers contracted it unknowingly and returned to the US carrying this virus.
Lastly, deer populations are increasing drastically in places like New England. With an increase in deer population comes an increase in fleas and ticks that thrive on these animals.
What Can You Do?
The CDC recommends taking precautions against fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes by being proactive and knowledgeable. Learn how to identify these pests and know their risks as education is key to prevention.
Wearing light-colored protective clothing while in wooded or overgrown areas is important. Also, do tick checks and take a shower after being outdoors. Keep grass and landscaping trimmed and short and be sure to reduce standing water in your yard to avoid breeding grounds.
You can also use repellent sprays that include DEET and permethrin. Follow the label instructions carefully for appropriate use. If you are a pet owner talk with your veterinarian about prevention and treatment options for your pet.
