We get eaten by bugs all the time. Mosquitoes, horseflies, deer flies, gnats, black flies, fire ants, ticks, fleas, spiders and more. There seems to be no end to the bugs that want to bite us. But, for some reason, there is something especially disturbing about bed bugs. Why is this? Well, we might have the answer. It is connected to the idea that these are filthy bugs. But, not in the way you might be thinking. Read on.

If you are like most people, you probably have the perception that bed bugs live in filthy homes. This is actually not true. Bed bugs have been found happily infesting some of the cleanest dwellings around. These pests will live anywhere they can get a steady diet of blood, even in a place as antiseptic as a hospital or luxury hotel. So, how is filth connected to these bugs disturbing?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this is especially true for bed bugs. If you do a search on the internet for the term "bed bugs," you're likely to see a filthy piece of furniture that looks like something a homeless person would sleep on within the first page of images. When you do, it is only natural to connect the dots and assume bed bugs only infest the homes of dirty people. But you would be missing a very important fact. Many of those images are of places that were invisible to the home owners, until discovered. You might be looking at excrement and urine staining on the interior of a mattress or staining that occurred between two mattresses. You might be looking at a hidden spot on a piece of furniture where bed bugs hid. You could be looking at a spot that was covered by blankets or hidden by some kind of covering. There are few people who would live in a home that had black and brown fecal staining all over the mattresses and furniture.

The point is: bed bugs don't infest filthy places. These bugs make places filthy by being in them. So, if you think bed bugs are disturbing, you are completely justified. They are. But don't think for a second that you can't get them in your home because you keep things clean.
