If you’ve ever had a cockroach run across your kitchen floor, you probably didn’t stop to think “what kind of cockroach was that?” That’s probably the last thing you were thinking! If a Witt pest control technician sees a cockroach run across the floor, our very first thought is not “EEEEK”; we’re quickly trying to identify your insect. Because we are pest control professionals, we know our cockroach identification, so if it’s an Oriental cockroach, an American cockroach or a German cockroach, we can tell! But all that will matter to you is whether or not we can get rid of them! And yes, we can get rid of them! But because we’re so passionate about what we do, we’ve compiled some information about the types of cockroaches in Pittsburgh to help you identify that scurrying cockroach that just ran across your kitchen floor.
American Cockroach: This is the largest species of cockroach we find in Pittsburgh homes. The American cockroach can grow to be 2 inches long and they are reddish brown, with a yellow figure 8 pattern on the backs of their heads. They can be found in food processing areas and they are especially active when the temperature is over 70°F. These roaches can be found in moist environments, including sewer systems and basements.
German Cockroach: Adult German cockroaches grow to be between 1/2 and 5/8 of an inch long. They are light brown to tan and have two almost parallel stripes on their backs. They can be found in structures with paper products and packaging as well as used appliances. They prefer to be indoors, but may move outdoors when the weather is warm.
Oriental Cockroach: These cockroaches grow to be 1 inch long and they are dark brown/almost black in color. Oriental cockroaches often travel through sewer pipes and can be found in basements, crawl spaces and under sinks. Outdoors they will be found under stones and leaf piles; they like any dark and damp areas in which they can hide and feed on decaying materials.
Because cockroaches are known for hanging out in such dirty places, they are quite capable of picking up pathogens and bacteria on the hairs on their legs and bodies. They can then transfer these pathogens to your food prep surfaces as well as directly to your food. This is a threat to your health, because through the transfer of these pathogen, cockroaches can make you and your family sick. Children have also been known to develop allergies in homes with cockroach fecal matter and cockroach debris; having cockroaches in your home is a bad situation, no matter what way you look at it. To prevent these insects from invading your home, the Pittsburgh Exterminators at Witt have come up with a few cockroach prevention tips for you to follow:
Keep food off counters and stored in the refrigerator.

Regularly clean your kitchen, paying close attention to areas behind and under appliances.
