What do bed bugs, mosquitoes and ticks have in common?
They all suck.
No, literally, they all suck your blood.
All jokes aside, many residents in the Pittsburgh area are having trouble with these blood feeding pests this summer. There are many threats associated with bed bugs, mosquitoes, and ticks including:
Itchy, red welts and/or rashes
Spread of diseases
Home infestations that are hard to treat
Can affect our pets
While bed bugs are the least threatening in terms of our health, they sure can overrun a home and leave you feeling very unsettled. Bed bug problems are still on the rise and affecting homes, schools, hotels, and businesses in Pittsburgh and throughout the country. They are nighttime feeders who require blood meals in order to grow and breed. Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites, but for some they are itchy, red welts and usually in a line of three. Being cautious while traveling is the best way to avoid bringing home a bed bug infestation.
Mosquitoes can swarm our properties by the thousands and each bite is a tiny injection to the skin which threatens us with such problems as West Nile virus. But here’s an interesting fact, it is only the females who bite us and suck our blood and that is in order to supply nutrients to her eggs. While you can’t get rid of mosquitoes entirely, if you remove all sources of stagnant water, you take away breeding sites and hopefully cut down their numbers significantly
As for ticks, well they not only affect our pets but they can also leave us subjected to Lyme disease. Ticks are usually waiting outside in the transitional areas of woods and tall grass to latch onto their host. They will begin to feed on your blood and while you may not notice anything as they are biting, the later signs of Lyme disease may include a bulls eye rash and flu like symptoms. Tick checks are very important through the summer season for humans and pets!
