Before you know it, termites will be swarming in Pittsburgh and throughout communities across the country. Don’t worry, if the word swarmer is not ringing any bells for you then you are not alone. But make sure that you read on to learn what swarmers are and how to prevent falling victim to termite infestations this year.

In colder climates, subterranean termites (the ones that live underground) are not very active during the winter. But when the ground begins to warm up in the spring, the termites will become active once again, just in time for mating season. In the world of termites this means that the reproductive termites, also known as swarmers, will emerge from the termite colony in an attempt to find a mate and move away to form a new colony.

Swarmers have wings and can often be confused with flying ants at first sight. A termite swarm is quite alarming because it is a mass of flying termites all buzzing around in a few moments of sheer chaos before they lose their wings and land back on the ground. If you do not see the swarm first hand, you will probably see the aftermath, which will be tons of wings covering the lawn, porch, or wherever the termite swarm took place.

It is important to know that the swarmers are harmless to humans because they do not bite, spread disease nor do they even chew wood like their fellow worker termites. Swarmers are simply the reproductives, which means that if you are finding swarmers, you have a termite infestation nearby.

We encourage all of our Pittsburgh home and business owners to have their property inspected for termites this spring. If you do have a termite infestation it is best to catch it early before extensive damage has been done. Termites are responsible for over $5 billion in damages each year in the U.S. alone, so that shows you just how much damage these tiny wood destroying pests are capable of.
